Maine’s first Honor Flight trip takes Vinalhaven war veterans to Washington, D.C.

In March 2014, the first Honor Flight trip from Maine took four Vinalhaven veterans—Leonard “Bud” Skoog, Clarence “Cap” Conway, Gordon “Bobo” Walsh, and Fred Small—to Washington, D.C., to visit the war memorials dedicated to their service. Organized by Honor Flight Network founder Earl Morse, the trip provided an emotional and deeply meaningful experience for the veterans, who were joined by guardians and local supporters. The journey began with a heartfelt sendoff from Vinalhaven students and community members and included stops at memorials for WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, along with Arlington National Cemetery. The trip offered these veterans a long-overdue sense of gratitude and camaraderie, with moments of reflection, recognition, and connection to younger generations. Honor Flight Network aims to ensure all veterans, especially WWII and terminally ill veterans, can experience this profound journey before it’s too late.
