I started volunteering in 2017 performing duties
from greeting veterans to selling merchandise at Welcome Home events. In 2023, I was
voted as Treasurer of the Board. In my years of volunteering, I have had the pleasure of
working with many supporters, veterans, and their families.
My parents taught me to honor the
men and women who served our country. My first memory is of my uncle looking at me and
letting me know he loved me. He then went to serve in Vietnam. My dad served, my great
uncle served, cousins, brothers, husband and daughter have all served. Giving back to our
Maine veterans is an honor.
My favorite memory is of a trip to DC and
visiting the Vietnam Wall. There I saw a father and son looking at the Wall of names. I asked
how I could help, and they stated the dad was looking for a friend. After the rubbing of the
name, I left the pair to remember. The next stop was at the Navy Memorial where Honor
Flight Maine honored a fallen sailor. The fallen sailor was the son and grandson of the pair I
had just helped at the Wall. They asked me to be near them as they heard the words of
gratitude of the fallen sailor’s service. Tears come to my eyes every time I remember.
